The Pokémon Company has officially announced that Pokémon Pokopia, the new life-sim game with blocky aesthetics, will launch on March 5, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement came surprisingly on November 11, without a Nintendo Direct, leaving the community with a mix of excitement and controversy.

New gameplay trailer this week

The wait to see more of the game won't be long. The Pokémon Company has confirmed that next Thursday, November 13, at 6:00 AM PT / 9:00 AM ET, a new trailer will be revealed featuring approximately 10 minutes of gameplay. This will be our first opportunity to see in-depth the mechanics of this peculiar spin-off that combines life-sim elements like Stardew Valley with the aesthetics of Minecraft and the Pokémon universe.

The controversy: Game Key Card (GKC) format

Alongside the good news comes controversy. Pokémon Pokopia will be the first Nintendo-published game to use the physical Game Key Card (GKC) format, a system that doesn't include the game data on the cartridge, but only a license to download it digitally. Nintendo has even published an instructional video about this format, using Pokémon Pokopia as the main example.

The game will require 10 GB of storage space on the console, which must be downloaded even with the "physical" version. This format has generated backlash among collectors, who prefer cartridges with all data included.

Pre-orders and digital format

Digital pre-orders will begin tomorrow, November 12, on the Nintendo eShop, while in Japan, physical edition pre-orders will start on November 13.
