Nintendo has surprised the world by announcing the Nintendo Switch 2 without prior notice through a video on YouTube. This announcement confirms many of the rumors and leaks that have been circulating in the gaming community.
The new console retains its hybrid nature, allowing users to play both in handheld mode and on a television through a redesigned dock. Among the most notable features are the Joy-Con controllers with magnetic mounts, which make attachment and detachment easier, enhancing the user experience. Additionally, these controllers feature a predominantly black design with salmon and light blue accents under the joysticks, although completely black versions have also been showcased.
Another innovative aspect is the inclusion of an optical sensor in the Joy-Con, which could offer functionalities similar to a mouse pointer, expanding the possibilities for interaction in games.
The console includes a slightly larger screen and a more stable U-shaped stand for tabletop mode. Additionally, it incorporates a second USB-C port and a new button on the right Joy-Con, whose function has not yet been disclosed.
Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backward compatible with both physical and digital games from the original Switch, ensuring continuity for users' libraries. The company is expected to reveal more technical details, such as hardware specifications, release date, and price, at a Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 2, 2025.
Furthermore, in-person events have been announced in various cities, where fans will have the chance to try the console before its launch. In Spain, Madrid will host one of these events from May 9 to 11, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the innovations of the Switch 2 firsthand.
The game chosen for the presentation was a new Mario Kart title, although it has not been specified whether it is an entirely new version or an adaptation of the existing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
With this announcement, Nintendo aims to continue the success of the original Switch, which has sold more than 146 million units worldwide, solidifying its position as one of the best-selling consoles in history.
The anticipation for the Nintendo Switch 2 is high, and fans won’t have to wait much longer to learn all the details about Nintendo’s next generation of consoles.
